A Tender Moment

This shot was taken early in the morning at Dunraven Pass in Yellowstone National Park. I had been photographing this sow and her cubs for over an hour and a half. Initially they were at perhaps 150 yards, but the sow was obviously used to people watching her, and kept moving closer to the road. More and more photographers showed up until there were roughly 10 of us lined up along the road. The group of photographers was pretty well behaved, with no one making any real noise and no one leaving the road to get closer to the bears. Eventually the sow wandered to the top of a road cut maybe 20 feet from the road, layed back on her rump, and nursed her two cubs for 5 minutes. I was enthralled. In 6 years of photographing bears in the Park, I had never seen this behavior. It was almost as if she was showing off her cubs. Fortunately the entire group of photographers had backed away to the other side of the road on a small hill about 25 yards from the bears, providing this great vantage point. When she finished nursing, she led the cubs away up the hill providing another 30 minutes of photography and forcing me to replace my filled flash card and drained battery.
